Why Does Your Teen May Benefit From Therapy?

Your child may cope by shutting down and not talking to you about their struggles.

Adolescence is a time of big changes—emotionally, socially, and academically. Teens may feel overwhelmed by school pressure, anxiety, sadness, self-doubt, or friendship struggles.

As a parent, it’s painful to watch your child struggle, especially when they shut down or push you away. Their mental health can impact the whole family, leaving you feeling helpless. But you’re not alone—and change is possible.

Psychotherapy offers teens a safe space to be heard, learn coping skills, and build resilience. It also helps families reconnect and communicate more effectively. Seeking therapy can be a powerful step toward healing and connection.

You child may cope by shutting down or not talking to you about their struggles.

You may downplay the severity of their child’s mental health challenges, thinking it will pass on its own. You may blame the child or your self for their struggles and feel guilty and frustrated. You may neglect your own emotional needs. These reactions are normal for many parents experiencing teen mental health challenges.

If your child does not turn to you for help when they really need it, you may need a space where your child can learn effective coping strategies while their connections with you can be strengthened.

Family therapy helps reduce your child’s mental health issues and improves your relationship. It promotes open communication, reduces conflicts, and teaches your teen how to manage tough situations and emotions, supporting their healthy growth during this critical time.

True Personalized Adolescent Therapy

Based on our research (see He et al., 2023He et al., 2022, and He et al., 2021), we believe that effective treatment should be personalized to fit each individual, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. People and relationships are complex, and studies state that evidence-based therapies only work for two-thirds of clients.

Unlike therapists who focus on specific methods, we specialize in Integrative Systemic Therapy, drawing from various therapies (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, mindfulness-based strategies, and many more) and scientific knowledge to create a plan that’s tailored to you. After a thorough assessment, we’ll recommend strategies based on our clinical judgment, and if one doesn’t work, we’ll try another until we find what truly fits your needs.

Our Family Therapy for Adolescent Process

Comprehensive Assessment

For initial sessions, we do a thorough assessment of mental health conditions, family relationships and history. We offer feedback on how we view your child's challenges and parental stress within the family, school and community contexts.

Meet with Parents and Adolescent Separately

We meet with parents to offer psychoeducation, validate your concerns, boost your understanding of your teen, and improve your parenting skills. We also meet with your child to teach coping strategies and help them express difficult feelings openly.

Conjoint Family Sessions

When both sides are ready, we bring parents and teens together for open talks about past hurts and frustrations. Our goal is to help you understand each other. We also focus on problem-solving and finding resources for teen mental health.
